In every channel, the buyer should verify the exact product, crystalline-silica evidence, technical file, availability, commercial terms and destination-market requirements.

Start with the order profile, not the supplier channel

The sourcing market is broader than it was a few years ago, but that does not mean every channel fits every order. A sample-led project, a showroom refresh and a multi-container distribution program have different priorities for stock, design breadth, documentation, MOQ, logistics and repeat-order control.

Three practical channels are visible in the current ANZ market:

  1. Australian-market brands and distributors — local or locally stocked silica-free ranges such as Alpha Zero, Warner Stone and SilkSurface.
  2. International branded lines — global or cross-market products with low-silica or sub-1% crystalline-silica positioning, such as Caesarstone ICON and Enigma by Superior Surface.
  3. Direct-import supply — factory or supply-coordination routes from China and other manufacturing markets, usually requiring the importer to perform deeper product, factory and documentation verification.

The useful sequence is to define volume, format, destination, application, required documentation, target landed cost and replenishment needs first. Then compare channels against those requirements.

Channel 1: Australian-market brands and distributors

Australia’s product prohibition created a strong incentive for the local surface market to move toward products that fall outside the regulated engineered-stone definition. Current examples include Alpha Zero’s crystalline-silica-free mineral surfaces, Warner Stone’s zero-silica engineered stone positioning and SilkSurface’s independently verified silica-free solid-surface products.

Potential advantages of this channel include:

  • Local product support: local showrooms, distributors or warehouses may make samples, full slabs and technical documents easier to access.
  • Potentially shorter lead times: where the selected SKU is already in local stock, the buyer may avoid overseas production and container transit time.
  • Local commercial counterparty: when purchasing from an Australian entity, warranty, claim and replacement discussions may be simpler to administer.

Do not convert those practical advantages into an assumption of automatic compliance. Even a local brand should be checked at product level: confirm the current technical file, product identity, applicable silica statement, dimensions, fabrication guidance and warranty scope.

The Australian market has also seen newer collections enter the silica-free space. Alpha Surfaces launched its Autumn Gold Collection within its Alpha Zero program, marketed around its “Your Safety, Our Priority” positioning for Australian benchtops. Walker Zanger added ODYSSEY — a crystalline-silica-free engineered stone — alongside its RIDGELINE, NAVONA and LEVEL collections, signalling that US decorative brands are now treating silica-free as a standard offering rather than a niche. Valiant Surfaces markets a Silica-Free Collection (including Sienna, Calcatta Champagne, Alba, Autumn Gold and Cloudbourn Satin) alongside its porcelain range. As with every product named in this article, these are manufacturer claims: verify the technical file, product identity and applicable destination-market rules at SKU level before specifying.

Examples illustrate how different the “zero-silica” category can be

Alpha Zero describes its surfaces as crystalline-silica-free and made with premium minerals, recycled materials and resins. Warner Stone markets zero-silica engineered stone and a printed Lumina range. SilkSurface uses a different material system altogether: its manufacturer and certification sources describe a bauxite/aluminium-hydroxide-based solid surface with a polymer binder and silica-free verification.

That distinction matters because the buyer is not only comparing silica content. Fabrication behaviour, edge treatment, repairability, slab dimensions, finishes, heat/stain performance, warranty and installation requirements can differ substantially between material families.

Channel 2: International branded lines — separate sub-1% from “low-silica”

International product lines use different formulations and different terminology. Two current examples show why buyers should read the technical file rather than group everything under “low-silica.”

  • Caesarstone ICON: Caesarstone’s official material information describes ICON advanced fusion surfaces as containing less than 1% crystalline silica, with traces up to 1%, and states that the crystalline-silica position is verified through XRD testing.
  • Enigma by Superior Surface: Enigma markets a printed engineered stone formulation containing less than 35% crystalline silica, using dolomite and other minerals as part of the formulation.

These are different compliance lanes. In Australia, an artificial product below 1% crystalline silica does not meet the crystalline-silica criterion in the regulated engineered-stone definition. A product advertised at below 35% crystalline silica remains above that criterion and should not be treated as equivalent. Always review the complete product definition, exclusions and import documentation rather than relying on the marketing label alone.

For New Zealand, the regulatory position is different. WorkSafe New Zealand currently focuses on workplace exposure to respirable crystalline silica, risk assessment, substitution and dust controls. The public WorkSafe guidance reviewed for this article does not establish an Australian-style product/import prohibition. Buyers should therefore avoid automatically applying Australia’s 1% product rule to New Zealand.

Channel 3: Direct import — more control, more verification work

Chinese B2B marketplace listings and supplier marketing show active commercial interest in zero-silica and low-silica surfaces for export markets. These listings are useful for discovering possible suppliers, but a marketplace page is not evidence of production capability, formulation control, export readiness or destination-market suitability.

For direct-import programs, move through the verification sequence before negotiating a final price:

  • Identify the actual producing facility. Confirm the contracting entity, payment beneficiary, production location and product owner.
  • Verify product-specific evidence. Link silica and technical documents to the exact SKU or formulation being ordered. Range-level marketing is not enough for a high-risk import decision.
  • Review the test method and laboratory. XRF is useful for elemental analysis; XRD or another validated mineralogical method is generally used when the question is crystalline-phase identification or quantification.
  • Set change-control triggers. Re-review the evidence if the formulation, raw-material source, producing facility or other relevant product variables change.
  • Decide the batch-verification policy in advance. Batch-specific testing is not a universal legal requirement for every market or every order. Use a risk-based policy tied to product stability, supplier controls, destination requirements and the buyer’s own compliance program.

The commercial attraction of direct import is flexibility: buyers may be able to negotiate format, design, packing, private-label and volume programs closer to the production source. The trade-off is that the importer must build a defensible verification and documentation chain instead of relying on a local stockist’s existing product system.

A practical sourcing sequence for ANZ buyers

  1. Define the order profile. Specify volume, format, application, destination, timing, target landed cost and required documents.
  2. Define the destination-market rule. For Australia, review whether the exact product falls within or outside the engineered-stone prohibition. For New Zealand, review current WorkSafe requirements for RCS exposure and fabrication controls rather than assuming the Australian product ban applies.
  3. Build a product evidence checklist. Ask for the product identity, silica/composition evidence, test method, laboratory, TDS/SDS where relevant, dimensions, fabrication guidance and warranty information.
  4. Compare channels on landed cost and operating fit. Include product price, packing, freight, customs, inventory carrying cost, testing/inspection, MOQ and replenishment—not only the slab quotation.
  5. For direct import, qualify the supplier before the container. Confirm the actual producing facility, sample-to-production controls, packing, QC scope, document responsibilities and change-control process.
  6. Set a risk-based verification cadence. Re-test or re-review when product, formulation, raw-material source, producing facility or relevant regulatory requirements change. Do not invent a universal testing interval where the law does not prescribe one.

Bottom line

There is no single best zero-silica sourcing channel for ANZ buyers. Local brands and distributors can reduce operational friction when the right product is in stock. International brands can provide established product systems, but buyers must distinguish sub-1% surfaces from broader “low-silica” claims. Direct-import programs can offer more commercial and product flexibility at scale, but they demand the strongest supplier and documentation controls.

The correct decision starts with the order profile and destination rule, then moves to product evidence, landed cost and supply continuity. Treat the supplier channel as one part of the procurement system—not as a substitute for product qualification.
