Why this matters now
Between 2025 and 2026, major surface brands and specialist suppliers expanded their silica-reduced and crystalline-silica-free product portfolios. The important shift is not simply that alternatives exist; it is that multiple material systems now sit under similar commercial labels such as “low-silica,” “zero-silica,” “silica-free,” “mineral surface” and “advanced fusion surface.”
For B2B buyers, those labels are useful for discovery but not sufficient for approval. Before comparing price or aesthetics, identify what the product is made from, what crystalline-silica claim is actually being made, how that claim was measured, and whether the evidence applies to the exact product being ordered.
Australia remains the clearest product-regulation reference point
Australia’s engineered stone prohibition is the strongest current example of why composition language matters. The model WHS framework defines engineered stone, for the purpose of the prohibition, as an artificial product in benchtop, panel or slab form that contains at least 1% crystalline silica by weight, combines natural stone materials with other chemical constituents, and becomes hardened, subject to stated exclusions.
- From July 1, 2024: work involving the manufacture, supply, processing or installation of covered engineered stone benchtops, panels and slabs became prohibited across Australian jurisdictions, with implementation details governed by each jurisdiction.
- From January 1, 2025: covered engineered stone benchtops, panels and slabs became prohibited imports under regulation 5M of the Customs (Prohibited Imports) Regulations 1956.
Important terminology point: “under 1% crystalline silica” is not a universal global definition of “zero-silica.” In Australia, it is relevant because a product below 1% does not meet the crystalline-silica criterion in the engineered-stone definition. Importability still depends on the full product definition, exclusions and supporting evidence.
Four publicly visible formulation and product-program patterns
The current market is better understood as a set of publicly described formulation and commercialization patterns, rather than four clean chemistry categories. Manufacturers disclose different levels of detail, so buyers should avoid inferring a recipe that the supplier has not actually published.

What the major launches actually tell buyers
Caesarstone ICON: a sub-1% crystalline-silica route with published technical positioning
Caesarstone introduced ICON in 2025 as an “advanced fusion surface.” Its current official product information states that the patent-pending blend contains less than 1% crystalline silica, may contain traces up to 1%, uses a high proportion of recycled materials, and is verified through XRD testing. That is materially more specific than a generic “low-silica” marketing claim.
For buyers, the lesson is not that every Caesarstone product sits in the same compliance lane. It is that a brand-level launch should be traced to the exact collection and product file. The relevant evidence is the current technical statement for the product being specified, not the reputation of the parent brand.
Enigma: low-silica printed engineered stone is a different lane
Enigma by Superior Surface publicly markets a printed engineered stone formulation with less than 35% crystalline silica and describes dolomite as a major component. It also markets high-definition printing and a print depth of about 1 mm.
This is a useful example of why buyers must separate “reduced silica” from “sub-1%.” A product below 35% crystalline silica may materially reduce the silica content relative to conventional high-silica engineered stone, but it does not satisfy Australia’s under-1% crystalline-silica criterion on that fact alone.
Warner Stone: zero-silica plus printed decorative formats
Warner Stone’s current website markets zero-silica engineered stone across Australia and separately promotes its Lumina printing range with approximately 3 mm print depth. The sourcing significance is that silica-free positioning is no longer limited to plain solid colours; decorative and printed formats are also being marketed in the same category.
Buyers should still confirm which current SKUs use which formulation. A brand website can establish the company’s stated product direction, but order approval should be tied to product-specific evidence and current production information.
Alpha Zero and SilkSurface: alternative material systems broaden the category
Alpha Zero describes a crystalline-silica-free formulation using premium minerals, recycled materials and resins. SilkSurface is a different material route: its manufacturer and independent certification sources describe a bauxite/aluminium-hydroxide-based solid-surface system with a polymer binder and silica-free verification.
These products demonstrate why “zero-silica surface” should not automatically be treated as “quartz with the quartz removed.” The commercial category now includes multiple material families with different fabrication behaviour, edge treatment, repairability, dimensions, aesthetics and test documentation.
What B2B buyers should verify before sourcing
Every launch above begins as a manufacturer or brand claim. A sourcing decision should convert that claim into a controlled product file.
- Quantitative crystalline-silica evidence. Ask what the finished product is stated or tested to contain. Avoid relying only on labels such as “zero,” “low” or “reduced.”
- Test method and laboratory. XRF measures elemental composition and cannot, by itself, distinguish crystalline silica phases. XRD or another validated mineralogical method is generally used where crystalline-phase identification or quantification is required. Confirm the method, laboratory, reporting limit and sample identity.
- Finished product, not only base formulation. For printed, coated or otherwise decorated products, confirm the evidence applies to the finished SKU being supplied—not merely to a base formulation.
- Product identity and change control. Link the evidence to the product code, formulation version and production route. Re-review when raw-material source, formulation, production location or other relevant variables change.
- Destination-market status. Australia has a product/import prohibition tied to the engineered-stone definition. The UK, by contrast, is currently focused on workplace controls and enforcement; HSE’s 2026 guidance explicitly addresses safer processing and lower-silica substitution rather than a new product ban. Do not transfer one market’s rule to another.
Read the label, then read the evidence. “Silica-free,” “zero-silica,” “low-silica” and “silica-reduced” are not globally harmonized product classes. The useful procurement question is: what does the finished product contain, how was that measured, and does the evidence match the exact product and destination market?
The China supply angle
Chinese B2B marketplace listings show that zero-silica and low-silica engineered surfaces are being actively marketed for export, including listings targeting Australia and New Zealand. Marketplace listings are useful as a supply signal, but they do not verify manufacturer identity, production scale, formulation, laboratory evidence, origin, export eligibility or final FOB pricing.
For a China-direct program, the correct sequence is therefore evidence first, quotation second: identify the exact product and producing facility, review the composition and test file, confirm sample-to-production controls, and only then compare commercial terms.
Thailand-based YSD Stone (established 1998, ysdstone.com) positions itself as a factory-direct supplier of quartz surfaces for global distributors and fabricators, with a range covering handcrafted quartz slabs, printed quartz and silica-free quartz. China-based Wayon Stone Group (wayon.com) runs a broader multi-material program that includes quartz, zero-silica quartz, inorganic terrazzo, flexible stone, engineered marble and porcelain. Both are examples of the export-facing supply side that marketplace listings only partially represent — neither a marketplace listing nor a brand website verifies production scale, formulation, laboratory evidence, origin or export eligibility on its own. The evidence-first sequence described above applies to Thailand-direct and China-direct programs alike: identify the exact product and producing facility, review the composition and test file, confirm sample-to-production controls, and only then compare commercial terms.
Bottom line for importers
The 2025–2026 product cycle confirms that silica-reduced and crystalline-silica-free surfaces are becoming a broader commercial category, but it also makes category labels less useful on their own. A proprietary sub-1% fusion surface, a 35% dolomite-based printed slab and a silica-free bauxite-based solid surface may all be promoted as safer alternatives, yet they are not the same material and should not be qualified using the same checklist.
For Australia, verify whether the exact product falls outside the regulated engineered-stone definition and maintain supporting evidence for the import transaction. For other markets, evaluate silica reduction alongside fabrication controls, performance, dimensions, documentation and commercial fit.
